The announcement to run for president is one of the most important steps potential candidates will make on their journey to the White House.

Today is the eight year anniversary when then Senator Barack Obama took that important first step.

Surrounded by his wife and two young daughters, then Senator Obama stood on the steps of Illinois’ Old Capitol Building and announced his candidacy for President of the United States.

He would go on to win not one, but two terms in office. This year’s anniversary of then Senator Obama’s presidential candidacy announcement is especially important because this year is when the country will learn who will place their names in the hat to become the next President of the United States.

Possible contenders on the Republican side include former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, and Kentucky Senator Rand Paul.

On the Democratic side are former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Vice President Joe Biden, and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren.

Clinton and Biden know what it’s like to run to become the next president and how it feels to lose out on becoming the next president.

In 2008, Biden got out of the race pretty early while Clinton held on almost till the last minute.

Although both ended up with what many will consider to be real good consolation prizes, a person can’t be mad at either of them for thinking about trying again at the ultimate prize of becoming Mr. or Madame President.
